The concert ‘1916: The Grim Reality’ is the second of our three
concerts reviewing music at pivotal stages of WW1. Actors
Jane, John and Martha Godber develop the stories of soldiers
in the Battalions of the East Yorkshire Regiment and their
families we heard about in 2014.
The Heroic Elegy by Ernest Farrar, who was one of the more local
musicians to be lost at this stage of the War precedes Lament
by Frank Bridge which recalls a young relative sunk on the
Lusitania. Music for Orchestra is by Rudi Stephan, a promising
German composer shot by a Russian sniper, and Polonia by Elgar
was written to raise money for the Polish victims.
As one of 100 orchestras taking part in the Battle of the Somme Centenary Tour,
the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany the iconic 1916 film The Battle of
the Somme by Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell using the acclaimed score by
UK composer Laura Rossi, commissioned by the Imperial War Museum.
